Fall Semester
Association of American Publishers
71 Fifth Avenue (between 14th & 15th Streets)
New York, NY
IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE IS SOLD OUT - WEBINAR IS STILL AVAILABLE
The PSP Electronic Information Committee (EIC) is introducing the fourth installment of the Seminar Series on Selected Topics in Electronic Publishing
The programs are targeted to staff new to electronic publishing at member organizations and address the transition underway from print to the electronic side of scholarly and professional publishing.
The members of the EIC are affiliated with organizations that have a breadth of experience in digital innovation, cutting across many subject disciplines and publication formats. The Committee, which holds education as fundamental to its mission, feels that this program will reach out to engage new members of the PSP community and share some of the Committee members’ expertise and insights through a succession of programs dealing with different topics in electronic publishing.
To facilitate discussion and interaction, the number of attendees will be limited to 18 attendees in person, and participants will be asked to commit to the full series of four sessions. We are also opening up the series as a webinar for those unable to travel to NYC for the course. Participation will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis to PSP members. A small fee ($100 for the full four-part series – in person or via webinar) will be charged to ensure commitment on the part of participants. PSP will provide a certificate to participants after completion of a series.
Each 90-minute session, focusing on an important current issue in electronic publishing, will offer a 45-minute presentation followed by a 45-minute Q&A with discussion. All sessions will run from 12:00 – 1:30 PM and a light lunch provided.

Usage Data
Angie Brown, Web Analytics Manager, MD Consult, Elsevier, Inc.
Many publishers run “usage reports” for their institutional customers. After all the time and money spent on report set-up, however, many publishers fail to take advantage of the powerful business insights hidden within this data. The field of web analytics takes online user behavior data and turns it into actionable insights for product managers, editors, and marketers. Using examples from Elsevier’s flagship MD Consult online reference product, Angie Brown will show how to use data to move beyond reporting, to a deeper understanding of your customers and their interaction with your content.
Tuesday, October 26th – 12:00-1:30pm
Mobile Delivery & Development for Scholarly Publishers
Jonathan Morgan, Assistant Director, Web Strategy & Innovation, American Chemical Society, Publications Division
Many publishers are now considering the launch of customized mobile extensions to their electronic journals and books platforms, yet most also recognize the important distinction between meeting users’ requirements and expectations when consuming scholarly information on a mobile device versus a laptop/desktop setting. Whether you’re building a mobile application or a mobile-friendly Web interface, your organization’s solution should be driven by end-user behavior and preferences — consider the element of urgency attached to your content and focusing on consumption in 5-10 minute opportune windows of time. Your mobile offering affords you the chance to simplify, reinforce the value of serendipity in information discovery, and lead the way as an innovator in publishing. In this session, Jonathan Morgan will share a case study on design and development efforts for ACS Mobile, a new iPhone/iPad application that delivers a multi-journal, real time stream of peer-reviewed research content for the American Chemical Society’s publishing program.
Tuesday, November 16th – 12:00-1:30pm
Web Design and Navigation
Wendy Queen, Associate Director, Publishing Technologies Project MUSE / JHUP
Design and site navigation should be driven by metrics and usability studies to create a unique and successful User Experience. The primary goal is to connect the user with content and encourage directed discovery while providing the opportunity for non-linear exploration.
Using Project MUSE as a case study, we will explore the achievements of a redesign and the necessary steps taken to ensure the user experience continues to be current, fluid and robust. MUSE has partnered with libraries and external UX experts to define its strategy. In this session, Wendy Queen will discuss the relationships and roles of the partners and demonstrate the evolution of the site based on the findings.
John Whalen, PhD, Director, Design and User Experience from e.magination conducted a competitive UX analysis and has been invited to join the discussion.
Tuesday, December 14th – 12:00-1:30pm
Social Networking - ResearchGATE
Ijad Madisch, CEO, ResearchGATE
ResearchGATE (www.researchgate.net), the largest social network for researchers and scientists was founded by two virologists and an IT specialist in May of 2008. The vision was to create a platform where users could find other like-minded researchers working on similar projects and enable scientific collaboration between them. After just two years, the network has attracted over 400,000 members and the community is
continuing to grow at an incredible rate internationally. ResearchGATE’s thousands of groups provide a platform for users to discuss the latest scientific discoveries and difficulties within labs worldwide. Users can also contact researchers directly and share updates and results with their contacts and followers through their microblogging feed. We are adding new features frequently and always looking for ways in which the site can be improved, pushing forward the concept of Science 2.0.
These will be interactive sessions, so bring your questions for the panelists.
