130 East Randolph Street
Chicago, IL 60601

Who Should Attend?
Editors, Rights & Permissions, Production, Marketing, Sales and Finance personnel from all organizational levels who want to gain a basic understanding of copyright considerations in a publishing environment.

Program:
The proliferation and ease of the distribution of digital content along with ongoing changes in the law have made understanding and complying with copyright an increasingly daunting task. Copyright holders are often unsure of their rights and obligations under the law. Many (if not most) users of copyrighted materials simply don’t understand when permission is required and the consequences of not obtaining permission. In addition, concepts such as fair use are often discussed but frequently misunderstood.

This session provides an overview of fundamental copyright concepts, with a focus on concerns primary to the publishing industry in today’s dynamic, digital environment. This session is intended to provide participants with an understanding of basic copyright principles and enable them to begin to apply that learning to their daily activities. Specific topics to be covered in the session include:

  • The purpose of copyright law
  • A copyright holder’s rights and obligations under the law
  • What actions may require permission
  • Copyright infringement and the remedies available to the copyright holder under U.S. law
  • Fair use and other limitations on the copyright holder’s exclusive rights
  • Current copyright issues and key changes in legislation

Format:

  • Four and a half hour, interactive workshop
  • Lecture with PowerPoint presentation
  • Participants will receive handouts

Presenters:
Fred Haber, Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary, Copyright Clearance Center
Eric Slater, Manager, Copyright Permissions & Licensing, American Chemical Society
