The Professional/Scholarly Publishing (PSP) Division of the Association of American Publishers Electronic Information Committee (EIC) Presents…
Seminar Series on Selected Topics in Electronic Publishing
Spring Semester
Association of American Publishers
71 Fifth Avenue (between 14th & 15th Streets)
New York, NY
and via webinar
The PSP Electronic Information Committee (EIC) is introducing the second installment of the Seminar Series on Selected Topics in Electronic Publishing – starting with four programs this spring and four more in the fall. The programs are targeted to staff new to electronic publishing and address the transition underway from print to the electronic side of scholarly and professional publishing.
The members of the EIC are affiliated with organizations that have a breadth of experience in digital innovation, cutting across many subject disciplines and publication formats. The Committee, which holds education as fundamental to its mission, feels that this program will reach out to engage new members of the PSP community and share some of the Committee members’ expertise and insights through a succession of programs dealing with different topics in electronic publishing.
To facilitate discussion and interaction, the number of in-person attendees will be limited to 18, but we will also be offering the series as a webinar and participants will be asked to commit to the full series of four sessions. A small fee ($100 for each four-part series) will be charged to ensure commitment on the part of participants. PSP will provide a certificate to participants after completion of a series.
Each 90-minute session, focusing on an important current issue in electronic publishing, will offer a 45-minute presentation followed by a 45-minute Q&A with discussion. All sessions will run from 12:00 – 1:30 PM and a light lunch provided.

Developments in Standards in Electronic Publication
Todd A. Carpenter, Managing Director, National Information Standards Organization (NISO)
From the moment we awake until we lay down to sleep, we are all touched by standards in an innumerable number of ways, even though we almost never consider it. The same could be said of content as it flows through the information chain, from author’s research through submission, production and manufacturing (either print or electronic), then out the door to end-users and beyond in assessment and renewal. Over the past decade a flurry of new standards and best practices have developed to create and deliver electronic content. We are only at the beginning of this process and there remains a great deal to be done. This session will provide an overview of important work taking place related to standards for the exchange of electronic information including: identification, file formats, digital rights management, discovery and management of electronic resources. Specific projects that will be discussed are: the International Standard Text Code; ISBN and ebooks; license encoding; .epub;OpenURL;journal article markup; and individual and institutional identification.

Semantic Technologies
Stephen Leicht, Chief Operating Officer, Collexis Holdings, Inc
The emerging significance of semantic technologies owes much to publishers’ longstanding desire to improve the granularity of their content in a way that benefits their many customers. Entity extraction, the deployment of taxonomies and more could finally allow publishers to data mine and truly allow customers to precisely target only that specific content of genuine and ‘real’ use in their research. This seminar will offer an introduction to the possibilities with examples from STM and other industries, and will hopefully leave you enthused and energized about the possibilities for users and publishers.

Digital Preservation
Ken DiFiore, Associate Director of Outreach and Participation Services, Portico
The continued transition to reliance upon electronic resources has progressed dramatically, and professionals, researchers, students, faculty, and libraries share a common concern about the vulnerability of these resources and the need to take protective action today to ensure their ongoing availability. Scholarly and professional publishers have an important role to play in the digital preservation of their content and this seminar will include the a summary of the current state of work in digital preservation, a description of the major initiatives underway, and a discussion about how publishers can develop a preservation strategy in response to the need expressed by the community.
