1. What’s New on the PSP Web Site
Watch for the updated PSP web site, offering a new look, new feel and expanded information. It is scheduled to launch in mid-September at: www.pspcentral.org.
2. PSP Education and Training Programs
On Friday, September 12th from 12:00-1:00pm at the AAP/NY offices, the PSP Journals Committee will be hearing from guest speaker Patricia Brennan, Manager, Evaluative Products, Thomson Reuters. Ms. Brennan will be discussing journal level metrics and some of the initiatives in this arena that are of particular interest to publishers. If you or a colleague would like to attend or call in to hear Ms. Brennan please contact Sara Firestone at sfirestone@publishers.org. Seating is limited and on a first-come first-served basis.

Over the past year, seemingly everyone from Congress to the California auditor have decried college textbook costs, which have soared to an average of $700 to $1,000 per student each year. Many of these critics have pointed to online digital textbooks, which typically sell for half the price of print editions, as an affordable alternative.

A growing number of textbook publishers are offering digital editions these days, but a new study by a student group argues that many of those digital editions do not have the features that students want. The group, the Student Public Interest Research Groups, a collection of independent statewide organizations representing college students, surveyed 500 students from several campuses for the study.
Microsoft Research Offers New Software Tools That Support Open Access

At the ninth annual Microsoft Research Faculty Summit held in Redmond, Wash., on July 28 (www.research.microsoft.com/workshops/FS2008), Microsoft Research announced its vision to define computing and scientific research. More specifically, the company announced free software applications and a forthcoming Research Information Centre, in partnership with the British Library, to support this vision. Unlike Microsoft Corp. (www.microsoft.com), Microsoft Research does not sell anything. Microsoft Research has more than 800 researchers working across more than 55 areas of research, mostly based in Redmond. There are five other research labs worldwide.
