What is it?
A case study approach to learning about Journal Publishing both for the traditional print and newer electronic incarnations featuring instruction on acquisitions, business models, production, marketing, distribution & customer service, building a financial model, presentation ("making the pitch") and a look at the future of publishing. In between a series of classroom presentations and individual working group consultations on Sunday and Monday the recruits evaluate a journal publishing proposal and formulate a viable response to create a written tender. On the final day the recruits face the faculty for their "orals" and make the final pitch to "win" the journal for their Publishing House.
Who should apply?
Junior to middle-level staff with an interest in broadening their knowledge of journal publishing beyond their current job function. (A copy of the applicantÕs CV is required to assist in proper group assignment).
Who are the faculty?
A group of experienced publishing professionals representing a variety of organizations, including large and small for-profit and not-for-profit publishers.
What skills do you need?
A basic knowledge of publishing, familiarity with both word processing and spreadsheet software (e.g., Word, Excel), web literacy.
What can you expect?
A lot of work mixed with a lot of practical learningÉ and lots of fun!

Crowne Plaza Montreal Centre is centrally located in the cultural heart of Montreal. It is minutes from the financial district, Convention Center, Olympic Stadium, Botanical Gardens / Insectarium, Biodome and the Casino. The hotel is adjacent to the (Sherbrooke, orange line) Subway station. A few steps away from 100Õs of shops and boutiques, and movie theaters. It is next to the trendiest restaurants and the vibrant nightlife of St-Laurent and St-Denis streets, and walking distance to Chinatown and Old Montreal.
The nearest airport is Dorval International Airport (Montreal), which is approximately 9.5 miles (15km) from the Crowne Plaza Montreal Centre. A taxi will cost approximately $25 (Canadian Dollars) and is about a twenty-minute drive. Alternatively you can take public transportation, the "Gray Line" bus which costs approximately $10 (Canadian Dollars) and will take about 45 minutes to reach the hotel. Ask the "Information Desk" at the airport where to purchase tickets for the bus.
